![]() Wade H. Berrettini, M.D., Ph.D. Karl E. Rickels Professor of Psychiatry Director, Center for Neurobiology and Behavior University of Pennsylvania Dr. Berrettini leads research that is helping to explain the genetics and pharmacogenetics of several complex traits, including bipolar disorder and nicotine and opioid dependence. Nicotine dependence particularly affects people with psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. He and his team work with both animal models and human subjects on studies designed to identify susceptibility genes for common behavioral disorders. The dopamine D2 receptor is important in neurotransmission, the process of nerve-cell communication in the brain. Among recent projects, Dr. Berrettini and his colleagues conducted clinical trials to explore the role of genetic variation in the dopamine D2 receptor in response to the antidepressant bupropion and nicotine replacement therapy for tobacco dependence. In another study, they confirmed the association of bipolar disorder with a particular genetic variant. Dr. Berrettini joined NARSAD’s Scientific Council in 2002. He received the Selo Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Depression Research in 1996 (re-named the Falcone Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Affective Disorders Research in 1999), and Distinguished Investigator Awards in 1992, 1999 and 2004. |
