![]() Robert W. Buchanan, M.D. Professor of Psychiatry Chief, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center Outpatient Research Program Department of Psychiatry University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore Dr. Buchanan’s research interests span neurobehavioral and neuroanatomical investigations of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, and investigations of new pharmacological approaches for treating cognitive impairments and treatment-resistant symptoms in schizophrenia patients. He has conducted studies examining antipsychotic-reduction strategies in acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia; the use of adjunctive pharmacological agents to treat negative symptoms and cognitive impairments; and the comparative efficacy of clozapine and olanzapine in partially responsive schizophrenic outpatients. Among current projects, Dr. Buchanan is examining the efficacy of adjunctive risperidone for schizophrenia patients who have had an inadequate response to clozapine, and also the efficacy of adjunctive rasagiline for persistent negative symptoms. He has been involved in multiple aspects of the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) project, including identification of potential pharmacological targets for treating cognitive impairments; and in the organization of the FDA/NIMH workshop to develop guidelines for the conduct of clinical trials of cognitive-enhancing drugs. Dr. Buchanan received a 1988 NARSAD Young Investigator Award and was elected to NARSAD’s Scientific Council in 2006. |
