![]() Ariel Y. Deutch, Ph.D. Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology Director, National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence Vanderbilt University Medical Center Dr. Deutch’s research focuses on dopamine and its role in neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. While an increase in dopamine tone has long been proposed in schizophrenia, only recently has a decrease in dopamine tone in the prefrontal cortex been revealed. A decrease in dopamine in the striatum, a subcortical area, is also the proximate cause of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Deutch’s group focuses on how these site-specific changes in dopamine cause changes in the architecture of cells that respond to dopamine, and how these changes lead to cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and the loss of responsiveness to dopamine replacement therapy late in the course of Parkinsonism. The laboratory also investigates how atypical antipsychotic drugs used to treat schizophrenia impact cognitive changes in the illness. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 1995, Dr. Deutch received NARSAD’s Distinguished Investigator Award in 1997. |
