Robert R. Freedman, M.D.
Professor and Chairman
Department of Psychiatry
University of Colorado School of Medicine

Dr. Freedman leads research focused on the pharmacology and genetics of schizophrenia, which he pursues in three types of studies: through single-neuron electrophysiological analyses in laboratory animals of neurotransmitters thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, through correlated clinical experiments in human subjects and through studies of receptor binding and genetic expression in postmortem brain tissue.

People with schizophrenia are frequently heavy cigarette smokers. By finding genetic abnormalities in a part of the brain that responds to nicotine, Dr. Freedman and his team have identified a new strategy for treatment. The medication, which has some of the more helpful properties of nicotine, can be taken orally and is being tested in schizophrenia patients.

Dr. Freedman joined NARSAD’s Scientific Council in 2001. He received NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Awards in 1999 and 2006.
