![]() Elliot S. Gershon, M.D. Professor of Psychiatry and Human Genetics University of Chicago Dr. Gershon’s interests for the past four decades have included the neuro-biology, genetics and treatment of mental disorders, particularly major depression and bipolar disorders. He began his career in genetic epidemiology, creating new methods for family studies of disease. Before joining the University of Chicago as chairman of the department of psychiatry, a post he held from 1998 to 2004, he was Chief of the clinical neurogenetics branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. In recent years, Dr. Gershon has been examining genetic and chromosomal disorders and re- arrangements that can predispose to psychiatric disorders. He is currently using a method called array comparative genomic hybridization to advance the study of the genetic etiology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 1992, he received the Selo Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Depression Research (re-named the Falcone Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Affective Disorders Research in 1999) in 1996 and Distinguished Investigator Awards in 1998 and 2006. |
