Paul Greengard, Ph.D.
Vincent Astor Professor of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience
The Rockefeller University

Dr. Greengard’s interests have ranged from basic neural explorations to the development of therapeutic agents for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases. His quest has significantly advanced scientific understanding of the molecular basis of nerve-cell communication. In 2000, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to elucidating how neurotransmitters work in signal transduction in the nervous system.*

Early in his career, Dr. Greengard spent eight years as director of biochemistry at Geigy Research Laboratories. He was professor of pharmacology and psychiatry at Yale University for 15 years before moving to Rockefeller University, where he is currently involved in a large, collaborative study of autism, creating mouse models to learn how autism genes operate within the nervous system. Recently, research in his laboratory showed that a gene called p11 is closely related to serotonin transmission in the brain and may play a key role in determining susceptibility to depression.

Dr. Greengard joined NARSAD’s Scientific Council in 1992. He received NARSAD’s Lieber Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Schizophrenia Research in 1996 and Distinguished Investigator Awards in 1992 and 2002.

* Shared with Arvid Carlsson of Goteborg University, Sweden, and Eric Kandel of Columbia University. Dr. Kandel is a member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council.
