![]() Peter W. Kalivas, Ph.D. Distinguished University Professor and Chair Department of Neurosciences Medical University of South Carolina As a neuroscientist, Dr. Kalivas has focused on the cellular mechanisms and brain circuitry mediating psychiatric disorders, particularly in research to elucidate the brain molecules and neurocircuitry that underlie addiction, including addiction to alcohol and to cocaine. During most of his career, he worked at Washington State University, where he and his colleagues studied the cellular and molecular underpinnings of the brain circuits mediating addiction and also schizophrenia, and where he remained until moving to South Carolina in 1998. Dr. Kalivas holds the title of Distinguished University Professor at both the Medical University of South Carolina and Washington State University, and is an Honorary Professor of Neuroscience at Nanjing Medical University. In the public arena, he serves on the scientific council of the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Dr. Kalivas joined NARSAD’s Scientific Council in 2003. |
