![]() Husseini K. Manji, M.D. Chief, Laboratory of Molecular Pathophysiology Director, Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program National Institute of Mental Health The NIMH program Dr. Manji conducts is the largest of its kind in the world. The research focuses on disease- and treatment-induced changes in gene and protein expression affecting neuroplasticity and cellular resilience in mood disorders. The broad goals are to capitalize upon recent insights into the signaling pathways mediating the effects of mood stabilizers in order to understand the pathophysiology of severe mood disorders and develop improved therapeutics. Specific projects currently underway under Dr. Manji’s direction include: studies of nerve-signaling networks and analyses of brain tissue from mice models of neuropsychiatric disorders and from human postmortem brains; studies using signal transduction modifiers to investigate the pathophysiology of mood disorders and as potential therapeutics; and brain imaging studies on the effects of mood stabilizing agents and "plasticity enhancers" as treatment to alter the course of severe, recurrent mood disorders. Dr. Manji joined NARSAD’s Scientific Council in 2000. He received NARSAD’s Falcone Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Affective Disorders Research in 1999 and an Independent Investigator Award in 1998. |
