Each year NARSAD gives its prestigious Peterson Award to an individual/s who has demonstrated exemplary leadership, outstanding philanthropy, and a firm commitment to psychiatric brain disorder research. The award is named in honor of its first recipients, Pasqualina and Robert Peterson.

Tamar and Milton Maltz 2007 - Tamar and Milton Maltz
NARSAD has presented Tamar and Milton Maltz with its 2007 Peterson Award. The annual award, named for its first recipients, Pasqualina and Robert Peterson, was inaugurated in 1997 to recognize volunteers who display exemplary leadership, philanthropic contributions and longstanding commitment to NARSAD’s mission. The Maltzes were honored at a July gathering in New York, attended by members of NARSAD’s board of directors and its Scientific Council. Cleveland-based entrepreneurs and philanthropists, the Maltzes have worked on behalf of NARSAD for many years. Tamar Maltz served on the organization’s board of directors from 1993 to 2005. In 2004, the couple organized a fundraising gala for NARSAD in Washington, D.C., held at the International Spy Museum, which the Maltzes created with the media and entertainment company Malrite Communications Group, founded by Milton Maltz. The gala raised $1 million in support of NARSAD’s programs. The event also led to the establishment of an annual NARSAD gala and public mental health symposium in the nation’s capital. The Maltz’s son David joined the NARSAD board in 2005.

Mary and Mike Wallace 2006 - Mary and Mike Wallace
Mary and Mike Wallace may have done more than any other couple in the United States to reduce the stigma of mental illness. As a world-renowned journalist Mike Wallace has spoken openly about his depression and his recoveries from the condition. His wife, who supported him during his illness, also made public awareness of depression her cause. The pair first came to NARSAD through their good friend Jeanne Robertson, a long-time major donor and board member. She recommended them for the NARSAD Humanitarian Award in 1997. Since then, Mary and Mike attended many NARSAD events and became quite familiar with NARSAD's mission, with Mary ultimately joining the board in July 2002.

Sallie and Alex Van Rensselaer 2005 - Sallie and Alex Van Rensselaer
Sallie and Alex Van Rensselaer have been involved in the leadership of NARSAD for some time. Mrs. Van Rensselaer served as a board member from 1994 until 2000, during which time she and her husband hosted many highly successful fundraising fêtes for the organization. In their events, the couple, known for specialty-food retailing, blended gourmet cooking and dining with presentations on progress of mental health research given by NARSAD-supported neuroscientists. In 2004, Mr. and Mrs. Van Rensselaer initiated an annual gala fundraising event for NARSAD in Palm Beach, called “Sunshine from Darkness.” The dinner dance has become a highlight of the Palm Beach charity event season.

Elizabeth and Bob Gerwig 2004 - Elizabeth and Bob Gerwig
Both Bob and his late wife, Elizabeth Gerwig, served on the NARSAD board and Bob was treasurer for a number of years. Responding to the challenge of their son’s psychiatric condition, they determined to improve his life and to work in support of others. They held events for NARSAD in their home in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and in their winter residence in Naples, Florida. The capping accomplishment of NARSAD’s introduction in Naples was a fashion show luncheon, raffle and a mental health research symposium.

.
Shari and Garen Staglin 2003 – Shari and Garen Staglin
Shari and Garen Staglin have played a unique role in supporting NARSAD from early in their association with this organization. Both have been members of our Board of Directors Shari was Secretary and now Garen is a member of the Board. With their own compelling interest in the field of mental health research, they saw an opportunity to marry that interest with their very special background and experience in marketing and viniculture. Utilizing the resources of their vineyard in Napa Valley, California, they initiated an annual "Music Festival for Mental Health" in 1995. Each year, this festival has become a highlight of the early fall season in Napa Valley and its broader area. Its unique combination of events has succeeded in introducing a wider community to the need for and promise of mental health research.

.
Jeanne Robertson 2002 - Jeanne Robertson
Ms. Robertson has been a member of NARSAD's board of directors since 1990, assuming a leadership role as vice president in 1996. Innovative and persistent, she has consistently demonstrated her ability to get things done, according to Constance Lieber, NARSAD's President. Ms. Robertson's interest in the field of brain research stems from personal experience. In the 1980's her twin sons were diagnosed with serious psychiatric illness. When she was introduced to NARSAD in the late 1980's, she was impressed by the Alliance's goals.
.
Philip Ardery 2001 - Philip Ardery
As he watched the ravages of schizophrenia begin to dominate the lives of young neighbors and friends, Mr. Ardery saw the need for more research on this disorder. He helped form the American Schizophrenia Foundation in 1981. Subsequently, in 1985, this organization became the basis of the new alliance, NARSAD. Serving on the Board of Directors for many years, Mr. Ardery has also been the organization's principal legal consultant and advisor.
.
William B. and Marion Grable Nicholson 2000 - William B. and Marion Grable Nicholson
Mr. Nicholson has played a vital role in NARSAD since its inception. He was the first to come forward with a gift for research funding. The contributions of Bill and Marion, through the Grable Foundation, are directly linked to the growth of NARSAD. The guidance and leadership which the Nicholsons and the Grable Foundation have provided has been significant in NARSAD's achievements.
.
Connie and Steve Lieber 1999 - Connie and Steve Lieber

The impact of Connie and Steve on the success of NARSAD is immeasurable.
.
Pasqualina and Bob Peterson 1998 - Patsy and Hal Hollister
In 1989 Patsy and Hal founded NARSAD Artworks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reproducing and selling artwork by people with psychiatric disorders. The Hollisters chose to focus on art because they found that art was a ray of light for their daughter, Annick, who is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Since that time, millions of note cards, holiday cards, posters t-shirts, and calendars have been distributed nationwide. Both have served as integral members of NARSAD's board of directors.
.
Pasqualina and Bob Peterson 1997 - Pasqualina and Bob Peterson
