Typically thought of to be diagnosed in childhood, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be a lifelong illness that follows individuals into adult, accounting for anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000 in lost annual income for those who suffer from it. Adults with ADHD may be unaware they have the disorder, yet know they have difficulty getting organized and staying focused.

At a press conference held at the 22nd Congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology in Istanbul, Turkey, findings were introduced that suggest the key to understanding ADHD may be in its "inheritability."

To study this possibility, a collaborative group of researchers has been formed to study the impact of genetics on adult ADHD, called the International Multicentre persistent ADHD CollaboraTion, IMpACT. Led by genetics and psychiatry expert Barbara Franke, Ph.D., IMpACT will bring together researchers from 7 countries, including the U.S., to study largest clinical ADHD sample worldwide, consisting of more than 2700 adult patients and 3500 controls.

Also, "Dancing with the Stars" performer Karina Smirnoff is partnering with pharmaceutical company Shire plc  to raise awareness about ADHD, by discussing for the first time her own struggles with the condition.

Karina has struggled with the ADHD symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and
impulsivity, throughout her life.  She was diagnosed after a friend recognized
how her symptoms were impacting her life, and urged her to see a doctor.

"My parents tried anything and everything just to address my inattention and
provide an outlet for my hyperactivity," said Karina.  "They enrolled me in
activities that held my interest like figure skating, ballet, gymnastics, and
playing the piano.  Throughout my life, I have found ways to cope with my
symptoms, because I thought they were just part of who I am."

"After speaking with my doctor and getting diagnosed with ADHD, I realized
that having tools -- such as medication and organizational strategies -- would
help manage my symptoms," added Smirnoff.
