For immediate release It was the first time the ACNP presented Distinguished Service awards. In addition to Ms. Lieber, the organization honored three other individuals: Dr. Steven Hyman, provost of Harvard University and a professor of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, formerly director of the National Institute of Mental Health; Dr. Enoch Gordis, a professor of medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and visiting physician at Rockefeller Hospital; and Dr. Alan Leshner, chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and executive publisher of the journal Science. In honoring Ms. Lieber, Joseph Coyle, M.D., President of the ACNP and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said, "I would like to confer the award to Connie Lieber, who developed NARSAD into one of the most important private funding agencies in psychiatric research. Any of us who have been chairs of departments of psychiatry recognize the importance of NARSAD in catalyzing the careers of junior investigators, getting them to the point where they have sufficient publications and data to compete effectively for career development. I can think of no organization that has been more important to the early career development and subsequent career development of young investigators than NARSAD". On accepting the award, Ms. Lieber noted: "From my earliest awareness of the ACNP, I realized that it is the intellectual summit of the world of biological psychiatry. We cherish its focus on the basic science and root causes of mankind's most devastating disorders. We at NARSAD are in awe of the achievements of this membership. We are thrilled to have so many of your members volunteering their services on our Scientific Council and honored to have been able to support the research of an ever-growing cadre of ACNP members." The ACNP honor is one of several awards for Ms. Lieber this year. She received the President's Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill for her "extraordinary efforts toward the advancement of research," and the Advocacy Award from Research!America for "exceptional contributions as a volunteer advocate for medical or other health-related research." In addition, in May, NARSAD received the American Psychiatric Association's organizational Distinguished Service Award. About the ACNP The American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP), founded in 1961, is a professional organization of 600 leading scientists. Members are selected primarily on the basis of their original research contributions to the field of neuropsychopharmacology, the branch of medical science that studies the effects of drugs on the brain, mind and behavior.
