NARSAD Mourns the Loss of Senator Paul Wellstone, a Strong Advocate for People with a Mental Illness

(Great Neck, NY- ) — The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Senator Paul Wellstone. With his untimely death, we lose a courageous ally who fought tirelessly for the rights of the mentally ill. Senator Wellstone never hesitated to stand up for what he believed was right. He broke new ground when he introduced the Mental Health Parity Act in 1996, a large first step toward addressing the problem of inequitable and inadequate insurance coverage for people with a mental illness. Since then, he continued to champion the fight for mental health parity.

We will remember Senator Wellstone for his courage and determination, and perhaps most of all for his compassion for those who could not always speak for themselves.
