In Memoriam: Richard Jed Wyatt, M.D.

(Great Neck, NY- ) — Richard Jed Wyatt, M.D., a member of the NARSAD Scientific Council since 1991 and a 1999 Lieber Prize winner for Outstanding Research in Schizophrenia, passed away June 10, 2002. He was 63. Dr. Wyatt was a part of the NIMH Intramural Research Program since 1969, and studied schizophrenia, mood disorders, drug abuse, Alzheimer's disease, and the biology of sleep. He and his research associates developed experimental models of brain grafts for Parkinson's disease, and also demonstrated that early intervention could alter the course of schizophrenia. Dr. Wyatt was chief of the Neuropsychiatry Branch at NIMH, and also co-produced (with his wife, Kay Jamison, Ph.D.) a program series on bipolar disorder and creativity for public television.
