TWO-HOUR BROADCAST ON MENTAL ILLNESS RESEARCH AND TREATMENT AIRED ON PBS

(Sarasota, FL - ) — A locally produced two-hour broadcast on mental illness research and treatment, which featured a live audience call-in segment, aired Thursday, Feb. 17, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., on WEDU-TV 3, the Tampa affiliate of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

The television audience phoned in questions to a panel of physicians during the broadcast, “Sunshine from Darkness: Shining a Light on Mental Illness,” which included parts of a documentary on journalist Mike Wallace’s struggle with depression and segments from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) research symposium in Sarasota. At the symposium, Nobel Laureate John Nash, the subject of the film “A Beautiful Mind,” and his wife, Alicia, were honored along with singer Barbara Cook for their courage in dealing publicly with mental illness. Cook, who performed at the NARSAD symposium gala, appeared in the broadcast.

An encore presentation of the broadcast was shown Sunday, Feb. 20, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

NARSAD raises and distributes funds for scientific research into the causes, treatment, prevention and potential cures for severe mental illness, primarily schizophrenia, depression, and affective disorders.
