Healthy Minds, New Series by PBS Station WLIW21, to Debut in New York on Sunday, September 10
Featuring interviews with patients and experts on a range of disorders, series will serve as a resource for families and healthcare providers
(Great Neck, NY -
) — Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally, and are the leading cause of disability here and in Canada for people ages 15 to 44. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. While mental disorders are widespread in the population, the main burden of illness is concentrated in a much smaller proportion — about 6 percent, or 1 in 17 — who suffer from a serious mental illness.
For many families, the fear and shame associated with a diagnosis of mental illness often leads to suffering without hope. Healthy Minds, a new 13-part series developed by public television station WLIW (Channel 21) on Long Island, aims to remove the stigma that can prevent patients and their families from seeking help for mental disorders.
Each half-hour episode humanizes a particular mental health condition through inspiring personal stories, with the latest information about diagnosis and treatment provided by leading researchers and experts from institutions such as Columbia University, Rockefeller University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Episodes will cover a wide range of topics, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, stress, insomnia, chemical dependency, post-traumatic stress syndrome, attention deficit disorder, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, to bring the general public a better understanding of disorders that can affect anyone, at any age.
In the premiere episode, airing on Sunday, September 10 at 11:30 a.m. (ET), news veteran Mike Wallace and his wife Mary discuss how they dealt with his depression, revealing intimate details about his suicide attempt and ultimate recovery. In upcoming episodes, guests include Nobel Prize winning scientist and author Eric R. Kandel, M.D., and broadcast journalist Jane Pauley, who shares her personal struggle with bipolar disorder. (Please note, repeats of the show are still airing on Sundays at 11:30 a.m on WLIW21. See local listings.)
Healthy Minds is hosted by Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein, CEO and medical director of Holliswood Hospital in Queens, N.Y., and chair for the section on psychiatry at the New York Academy of Medicine. The executive producer of the series is Theresa Statz Smith; co-producer, Mary Puma.
As Dr. Borenstein explains, "Everyone is touched by psychiatric conditions, either themselves or a loved one. Our goal is to share cutting-edge information from experts along with personal experiences from people who have overcome psychiatric conditions. I want people to know that with help, there is hope."
Healthy Minds is made possible in part by NARSAD, Value Options, New York Academy of Medicine, The van Ameringen Foundation and the New York State Office of Mental Health.
Episodes of Healthy Minds will be rebroadcast on Sundays at 7:30 a.m. beginning September 17.
