NARSAD Benefits from Unique 9/11 Fundraising Event by BGC Partners
Cantor Fitzgerald Subsidiary Donates Trading Commissions
to Mental Health Research on Its Annual Charity Day

(Great Neck, NY - ) — NARSAD is among a handful of organizations in the United States to benefit from a recent one-of-a-kind charitable event commemorating 9/11.

BGC Partners, a leading inter-dealer broker and subsidiary of securities firm Cantor Fitzgerald, chose NARSAD to receive a portion of its trading commissions generated on September 11, 2007. In all, through its worldwide operations, BGC raised $6 million for 30 charities in the U.S., U.K., Europe, Asia and Australia. Since the annual fundraising day began three years ago, BGC has cumulatively raised over $15 million for charitable causes.

In BGC’s New York office, celebrity guests from the worlds of sports, film, television and radio joined the cheer on the traders and even assist them with multi-million dollar deals by getting on the phone with clients. On hand were television and film star Whoopi Goldberg, actor Eli Wallach, The Sopranos’ Tony Sirico and Robert Funaro, Desperate Housewives’ Harriet Harris, Yankees’ legends Yogi Berra and Bernie Williams, Mets’ former first-baseman/outfielder Ed Kranepool, Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning, former Bengals’ quarterback and football commentator Boomer Esiason, former Knicks legend Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, and sex educator and radio personality Dr. Ruth Westheimer.

BGC’s annual 9/11 Charity Day honors the great sacrifices made on that same day in 2001. The firm is named for B.Gerald Cantor, the late philanthropist and founder and chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald, which lost 658 employees at the World Trade Center disaster.

“BGC is honored to include NARSAD as one of the selected charities for its annual Charity Day in New York,” said Danny LaVecchia, president of BGC North America.

”NARSAD was chosen as it is the leading organization for research into mental illness and in the forefront of efforts to develop better treatments and cures. With an impressive Scientific Council that includes former Nobel Prize winners and former directors of the National Institute of Mental Health, NARSAD works hard to advance the understanding and treatment of diseases that are often little understood. With every cent of funds raised by the charity going toward this very important cause, BGC views NARSAD as a very worthy recipient of a contribution from this fundraising event.”

Geoff Birkett, NARSAD’s president and CEO, and Steve Doochin, executive vice president, attended BGC’s Charity Day to express their gratitude on behalf of the organization and its constituents. “By designating NARSAD and other worthy charities as beneficiaries of Charity Day,” Mr. Birkett said, “BGC has done something quite touching and very meaningful to honor the memory of those tragically lost on 9/11, not least those of Cantor Fitzgerald, whose story has touched millions of hearts”

“The cutting-edge research that BGC’s generosity will make possible will bring us closer to better treatments and cures for mental illnesses,” added Mr. Doochin. “For this, we thank the firm and all of its employees.”
