Award-Winning “Healthy Minds” TV Series Presents Second Season
Thirteen new episodes air Sundays on WLIW-TV Channel 21

(Great Neck, NY - ) — Local PBS affiliate WLIW-21, on Long Island, N.Y., has launched the second season of its award-winning “Healthy Minds” series, which examines the impact of mental illness and what we’re learning about the causes, symptoms and treatment of various disorders.

Airing on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., “Healthy Minds” seeks to combat the stigma of mental illness by sharing the stories of patients and their families who are coping with serious mental illnesses on a daily basis, including such disorders as autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse and other conditions.

The 13-part series also offers compelling insight into how prominent researchers in the field of psychiatry, including several NARSAD researchers, are working to combat these illnesses and help those affected lead more productive lives.

WLIW-21’s broadcast area includes the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, New Jersey and Connecticut. Each episode of ”Healthy Minds” will be available after airing in a streaming format on NARSAD’s website (www.narsad.org).

The premier episode, which aired on Sunday, November 2, was the first of a two-part special on autism in which five local families shared their personal challenges and triumphs in dealing with the disorder.

Additional episodes feature interviews with NARSAD Scientific Council members such as Nobel laureate Eric Kandel, M.D., of Columbia University, and Judith Rapoport, M.D., of the National Institute of Mental Health. Also providing their individual perspectives are a range of authors including William Cope Moyers (“Broken”), son of Bill Moyers, who discusses his struggles with addiction; NY1 journalist Dominic Carter (“No Momma’s Boy”), who talks about growing up with a mentally ill parent and recovering from child abuse; Elyn R. Saks (“The Center Cannot Hold”), who shares her inspiring story of living with schizophrenia; and Newsweek mental health reporter and author Sharon Begley (“Train Your Brain, Change Your Mind”).

“Healthy Minds” is hosted by Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D., who is CEO and medical director of Holliswood Hospital in Queens, N.Y., and chair for the section on psychiatry at the New York Academy of Medicine. Executive producer is Theresa Statz-Smith. The series is made possible in part by the New York Academy of Medicine, NARSAD, the van Ameringen Foundation, the New York State Office of Mental Health and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
