Mark Olfson, M.D., M.P.H.
Distinguished Investigator

Mark Olfson, M.D., M.P.H. received his undergraduate degree from Reed College, his medical doctorate from Northwestern University, his psychiatric residency training from Yale University, and a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University where he is currently Professor of Clinical Psychiatry. He has received a Distinguished Investigator Award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an APA Foundation Award for Research Development in Hospital Psychiatry, a National Psychiatric Endowment Fund Fellowship Award, and numerous federal and private foundation research grants. Dr. Olfson’s research involves evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of mental health care through analysis of service utilization data. His NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award uses national Medicaid claims and National Death Index data to evaluate whether treatment with SSRIs is associated with a change, either an increase or decrease, in suicide and suicide attempts among high-risk young people following inpatient treatment of a depressive disorder.
