Serge Beaulieu, M.D., Ph.D.
Independent Investigator
Dr. S. Beaulieu obtained a B.Sc. in Biochemistry followed by a M.Sc. in Neurobiology. He completed his M.D. and Ph.D. at Laval University in 1988, and his training in Psychiatry at McGill University in 1993. He then spent 4 years at the National Institute of Mental Health with Dr. Robert M. Post at the Biological Psychiatry Branch. He is back at McGill University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and holds associate membership in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery. He is also Medical Chief of the Mood, Anxiety and Impulsivity Disorders Program and Medical Chief of the Bipolar Disorder Program of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.
Dr. Beaulieu received peer-reviewed research funding from NARSAD (National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders USA), The Stanley Foundation (USA), the Canadian Fund for Innovation, FRSQ and CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research). He is also a member of the Board of Governors of CANMAT (Canadian Network on Mood and Anxiety Treatment) and one of the Investigators and founding members of the Canadian Bipolar Consortium. Dr Beaulieu is the recipient of the Douglas Utting Prize for 2004, which is awarded annually to one person in Canada who has contributed significantly to promoting awareness of depression and/or its research and treatment. He is also a member of the Board of Councillors of ISBD (International Society of Bipolar Disorder).
A psychiatrist and researcher-clinician, Serge Beaulieu is interested primarily in bipolar disorders (manic depressive illness) and major depression. He studies the neurobiological underpinnings of Bipolar Disorder and studies the efficacy of potential new treatments for these disorders.
