Young Investigator
Dr. Paddock studied medicine in Heidelberg, Germany, starting in 1993. In 1996, she went to Stockholm, Sweden, for a one year research visit within the Erasmus program. After this experience, Dr. Paddock decided to discontinue her clinical training and pursue a Ph.D. program at the Department of Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, which she finished in 2002. She then joined the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at NIMH in Bethesda, USA, for her post-doctoral training, mainly studying the genetics of bipolar affective disorder and pharmacogenetics. She returned to Sweden and the Karolinska Institute, where she now holds an assistant professorship. Dr. Paddock recently received an 'Ingvar Carlsson Award' - grant from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research in order to setup an independent research group. Her current research interests include development of data-mining techniques for gene-gene interaction identification in linkage data. Furthermore, Dr. Paddock's research unit will study glutamate receptor expression at the blood-brain barrier under normal conditions, as well as possible alterations during psychiatric illness, especially bipolar affective disorder.
