John Georgiou, Ph.D.
Young Investigator
John Georgiou is a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Neurodevelopment and Cognitive Function, a research division of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto. During his graduate studies, he studied interactions between neurons and glia at synapses (Ph.D., Dept. Physiology, University of Toronto: supervised by Dr. Milton Charlton). He is currently studying synaptic function in genetically modified mice, under the direction of Dr. John Roder, a NARSAD 2006 Distinguished Investigator. In his neuroscience research, Dr. Georgiou uses imaging, electrophysiology, pharmacology, and behavioural approaches to study neuronal signaling and plasticity. A gene product that is upregulated in psychiatric disorders is the neuronal calcium sensor (NCS-1). Dr. Georgiou will study the role of NCS-1 and interacting proteins in synaptic and cognitive function.
