Ilan A. Kerman, M.D., Ph.D.
Young Investigator
Dr. Ilan Kerman graduated from New York University in 1993 with a B.A in Biology. In 1994, he enrolled in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh and received his M.S. in Neuroscience in 1998, Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1999 and M.D. in 2002. Dr. Kerman’s Ph.D. research was conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Bill Yates and focused on investigating the physiology of vestibulo-sympathetic interactions and their role in cardiovascular regulation and in the prevention of syncope and orthostatic hypotension. For post-doctoral training, Dr. Kerman joined the laboratory of Dr. Stanley J. Watson at the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute at the University of Michigan, where he is currently a Research Fellow. Broadly, his current work focuses on understanding the neurobiology of affective illness. To this end, studies are carried out in post-mortem human brain and in rodents. Animal studies are focused on the organization of brain somatomotor-sympathetic circuits and their relevance to stress biology and to the expression of physical symptoms of affective illness. Human post-mortem investigations are aimed at profiling gene expression alterations in monoaminergic brainstem areas in subjects suffering from major depression and bipolar disorder. Dr. Kerman’s past awards includes Graduate Student Researchers Program Fellowship from NASA and nomination for the Van Harreveld Memorial Award from the American Physiological Society.
