Kirsty L. Spalding, Ph.D.

Kirsty L. Spalding, Ph.D.
Young Investigator

Originally from Perth, Australia, Dr Spalding received her Ph.D. from the University of Western Australia at the School of Anatomy and Human Biology, in the field of neuroscience. From 2002 until 2004, Dr Spalding was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Jonas Frisén at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Currently Dr Spalding is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Karolinska Institute, Sweden. During her postdoctoral period, Dr Spalding developed a technique using carbon dating and above-ground bomb-testing to study cell turnover in humans. She now plans to use this technique to assess where and whether new neurons (and glial cells) are added to the adult human brain, and to assess whether schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression are associated with aberrations in neurogenesis and/or gliogenesis. Dr Spalding has been the recipient of a Rotary International Foundation Ambassadorial Academic Scholarship (2001-2002), and was recently a finalist for the Eppendorf Young Investigator Award (2006).
