Carlos E. Alvarez, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of California, San Diego, plans to search for and identify genetic alterations in bipolar disease. The completion of the human genome project has made it possible to conduct a new type of analysis to search for such mutations. It is now possible to make DNA chips that allow the precise examination of all the chromosomes of an individual for major DNA alterations. Dr. Alvarez's goal is to detect various types of mutations in bipolar disease and to use these chromosomal abnormalities to identify genes involved in depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
