Xavier F. Amador, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2000) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, will test a short-term cognitive intervention in a sample of patients with schizophrenia. Dr. Amador is a co-developer of this intervention, which is aimed at improving poor insight and medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia. He aims to complete a manual for this new cognitive therapy, called Medication Adherence and Insight Therapy (MAIT); test the short-term effectiveness in a double-blind, placebo-controlled design; and identify patient characteristics that predict response to MAIT. It is hypothesized that patients receiving MAIT will show improved insight, improved adherence to their medication regimen; and a better clinical course over the follow-up period. The findings of this study promise to validate a cost-effective and easily learned intervention that targets two critical problems that are common in patients with schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
