Silviu-Alin Bacanu, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is proposing to develop a new method which aims to identify genetic variants that contribute to the risk of psychiatric disorders. The “tree classifier method” will be used to identify candidate genes. This method attempts to separate genes bearing mutations that cause increased traits or disease susceptibility into separate clusters based on whether or not they significantly increase the associations with the disease. This will permit the inclusion of only those variants that increase disease risk in genetic analytic models. The method can be represented visually as a tree in which the cut separates the high-risk genetic variants from the remaining ones. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
