Sabina Berretta, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of McLean Hospital, postulates that schizophrenia may involve several connected regions of the brain and is focusing her study on the amygdala (AMYG) and the limbic thalamus (L-THAL) in an attempt to show related abnormalities in these regions linked to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She is utilizing a three dimensional stereological approach to determine the number of neurons in the AMYG and the L-THAL. A second study will use standard cell counting methods to determine the numerical density of specific phenotypes in both the AMYG and the L-THAL. The possibility that changes in these regions may be interrelated will be explored. The study of cell loss will hopefully provide important information regarding the role of the AMYG and the L-THAL in relation to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
