Ian P. Blair, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, , proposes to identify a bipolar disorder susceptibility gene on chromosome 4, following up on strong evidence for its location there at the 4q35 locus. Bipolar disorder is a severe condition, the biological basis and causes of which remain unknown. Family studies reveal a genetic component and familial clustering offers an opportunity to use genetic studies to find the predisposing genes. Identifying the genes should lead to improvements in diagnosing, treating and preventing the disease. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
