David A. Brent, M.D. (Distinguished Investigator 2001) of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, will examine genes related to the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in adolescents with treatment-resistant depression. Previous work suggests that each of these neurotransmitters are involved in adolescent depression. Blood will be obtained for genotyping of 10 genes involved in serotonin and norepinephrine function in 400 treatment-resistant adolescent depressives and approximately 240 sets of biological parents. Associations will be examined between variations in these genes and risk of depression. This work has the potential to result in the discovery of vulnerability genes for adolescent depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) |
