Margit Burmeister, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2004) of University of Michigan, proposes characterizing several genetic variations called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on chromosome 18 that are associated with anxiety disorder and bipolar disease. A psychological survey, called the NE0-personality inventory, of 1,000 healthy people who also underwent genome scanning, performed by Dr. Burmeister and others recently found that a trait called neuroticism, or an anxious, worried and depressed personality, is located on chromosome 15 and 18. Other studies have shown a relationship of bipolar disease to chromosome 18. Besides looking at the relationship of the SNPs on a region of chromosome 18 to anxiety disorder and depression, Dr. Burmeister is collaborating with a group to analyze SNPs on the same region of chromosome 18 to determine if candidate gene(s) for bipolar disease might be present there. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
