Juan Burrone, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Harvard University, will examine the effects of inhibition of glutamate receptors on cellular and physiologic activity. Specifically, he will assess function of the glutamate receptors, glutamate release, and changes in the number of synapses, the connections between nerve cells. This work may have important implications for understanding schizophrenia, in which a reduction in glutamate activity has been hypothesized to play an important causal role. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
