William T. Carpenter, Jr., M.D. (Distinguished Investigator 2001) of University of Maryland, will assemble a work group to address the issue of informed consent in schizophrenia. This work group will identify the elements of informed consent which should be sustained, design an instrument to determine whether individual subjects are maintaining valid consent over time and during off-medication research, and design and test procedures for maintaining valid consent. This work is of critical importance given the recent debate about informed consent in “vulnerable” populations, and research studies in which patients are taken off medications. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
