Steven J. Clapcote, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital/University of Toronto, aims is to shed light on schizophrenia by studying the effects of mutations in DISC1 and PDE4B within the developing and adult brain in a rodent-based model. Disrupted in Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) and Phosphodiesterase 4B (PDE4B) are known susceptibility genes in schizophrenia. Dr. Clapcote’s results may provide insight into the molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia and generate new animal models for testing novel antipsychotic drugs.
