Charles R. Conway, M.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Saint Louis University, plans to study how electrical stimulation to the vargus nerve in the neck (VNS) relieves depression (bring about an antidepressant response) in individuals suffering from treatment resistant depression (TRD). Using a technique known as PET (positron emission tomography), Dr. Conway will look at the activity of the brain, including how much energy (glucose) is being used by a specific part of the brain. Results of his study may suggest new insights on how the brain reacts to VNS and may lead to better treatment methods for those with TRD. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Unipolar |
