Gail L. Daumit, M.D., MHS (Young Investigator 2003) of Johns Hopkins University, is examining the mechanisms underlying the increased mortality in individuals with severe mental illness. Diagnoses and health care utilization from 6000 Maryland Medicaid recipients with severe mental illness will be linked to dates of death and causes of death from the National Death Index from 1994 through 2002. Dr. Daumit will investigate the combinations of somatic comorbid conditions and antipsychotic medications that may contribute to early mortality.
