Larry Davidson, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2001) of Yale University School of Medicine, has designed a research intervention which will create a school-based program for identification of youth at risk for serious mental illness, as prior studies have demonstrated that the longer the symptoms of serious mental illness go untreated the more chronic the course and the worse the outcome of the disorder. His goal will be to facilitate more timely access to care. The program will seek to identify early warning signs of mental illness, decrease existing social-cognitive barriers to access and decrease the duration of untreated symptoms by increasing access to care either before or early in the illness. This study and others like it can lead to better prognosis, as well as provide important information on identifying features of at-risk individuals, and may lead to eventual prevention methods for serious mental illness. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Schizophrenia/Mood Disorders |
