Paola Dazzan, M.D., MSc, MRCPsych (Young Investigator 2007) of the Institute of Psychiatry/King's College London/University of London, will use multimodal brain imaging to study neurological abnormalities in patients with first episode psychosis in comparison to healthy individuals. Dr. Dazzan suggests that these neurological abnormalities represent a specific clinical sign of a problem in fibers connecting different parts of the brain. His results should help clarifying what type of anatomical and functional dysfunction underlies neurological abnormalities, and whether this dysfunction is specific to individuals with psychosis. Examining the brain correlates of neurological abnormalities will provide a better understanding of the pathological processes of schizophrenia and psychosis in general and the assessment of neurological abnormalities may facilitate the identification of a subset of individuals who are especially at risk of a more severe illness and who might benefit from more intensive intervention. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Psychotic Disorder |
