Gabriel Alejandro de Erausquin, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of Washington University, aims to study parkinsonism movement disorders in patients with schizophrenia. Movement disorders are prevalent in newly diagnosed patients with schizophrenia who have not received antipsychotic drugs. Parkinsonism also is associated with greater susceptibility to the side effects of antipsychotics and to poor treatment compliance and poorer outcome. In the proposed study, Dr. Erausquin plans to characterize the clinical characteristics and genetics of the movement disorders in a population of schizophrenics who have not received antipsychotics (because of cultural reasons) and in their first degree relatives and controls. He also plans to carry out imaging studies of the dopaminergic system with quantitative transcranial sonography. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
