Rita DeGasperi, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, will attempt to develop a new technique to determine if the new neurons created by antidepressant drugs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s), actually contribute to long-term stable and functional neuronal circuits. Using transgenic mice, Dr. DeGasperi will use a non-toxic protein called enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) to easily visualize (using microscopic techniques) the fate of stem cells stimulated by antidepressant drugs, and to determine if these newly generated cells contribute to stable and functional neuronal circuits.
