Melissa P. DelBello, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of University of Cincinnati, will examine whether first- and multiply-hospitalizedadolescents with mania demonstrate different patterns of structural and functional abnormalities of the cerebellum in response to an attention task. The cerebellum is a brain region that controls mood and attention. This may clarify whether cerebellar abnormalities occur at the onset of bipolar disorder, or whether they develop over time following repeated affective episodes. Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be administered to 12 first-hospitalized and 12 multiply-hospitalized adolescents with bipolar disorder. This work may help to clarify the brain areas affected in bipolar disorder. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
