Marisa E. Domino, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2007) of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, will look into the impact of Medicare Part D in the treatment of serious mental illness. New advances in psychopharmacological treatment have led to substantial increases in the quality of life and functioning of people living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. The Medicare Part D drug benefit, instituted in 2006, has substantially altered access to drug treatments and financial incentives for care. Dr. Domino’s research will examine North Carolina Medicaid claims and enrollment data from two years before the implementation of Medicare Part D to the first two years afterwards. Results from this study will be critical for assessing the influence of one of the most important changes in federal health policy in decades on individuals with serious mental illness. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS\Mood Disorders/Schizophrenia |
