Andrew J. Elliott, M.D., MPH (Young Investigator 2003) of Harborview Medical Center, will investigate a population of depressed individuals infected with HIV (who generally respond well to antidepressant medications). Plasma testosterone is often low in HIV infection and studies have reported that testosterone replacement increases mood, quality of life, energy, libido and weight. Dr. Elliot will investigate whether testosterone replacement is essential, or even needed, for antidepressant response in depressed individuals with HIV who have low levels of testosterone. Subjects will be randomized into four groups: placebo, testosterone, antidepressant and testosterone plus antidepressant. Response rates will be compared to determine the effects of testosterone and antidepressant on mood, quality of life, activity and overall effectiveness. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\HIV\Pharmacology |
