Igor Elman, M.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of McLean Hospital, is examining the relationships between the stress hormone cortisol, the hippocampus, and cocaine dependence in patients with schizophrenia. Previous work has demonstrated abnormalities of cortisol in schizophrenia, and cortisol appears to mediate the behavioral effects of cocaine. In addition, cortisol elevations may cause damage to the hippocampus. Dr. Elman will explore, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the role of the cortisol system in the mechanisms underlying schizophrenia and concurrent cocaine dependence. This study may pave the way for the development of therapeutic agents that stabilize activity of cortisol and offer symptom improvement.
