Effat S. Emamian, M.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Rockefeller University, believes that the phosphorylation of NR1 subunit of NMDA receptors in human brain plays an important role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Dr. Emamian’s aim is the characterization the phenotype of NR1 phospho-mutant mice to see how phosphorylation of NR1 contributes to development of schizophrenia (phosphorylation has been identified in the brain of patients with schizophrenia). Results of his study could lead toward the development of new medications that could directly target these specific sites on NMDA receptors for the treatment of mental illnesses. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
