Piers C. Emson, Ph.D. (Distinguished Investigator 2001) of The Babraham Institute, will use a newly developed mouse with a mutation of the vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 gene (VMAT2) to investigate the influence of deficits of certain neurotransmitters on the development of the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. Monoamine neurotransmitters and these two brain regions have been implicated in schizophrenia. Gene expression changes will be examined in these animals in parallel with studies of brain anatomy. Data from these studies will be used to screen for similar expression changes in cerebral cortical samples from patients with schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
