Juan M. Encinas, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, aims to investigate if antidepressant treatments, such as electroconvulsive therapy, and deep brain stimulation (DBS), increase neurogenesis by targeting the same neuroprogenitor cell as fluoxetine. Once transcriptional signature of each treatment is obtained, Dr. Encinas will compare and seek for common regulatory pathways. He also plans to further analyze the expression of selected genes. Dr. Encinas’ work in exploring how different antidepressant therapies increase adult neurogenesis, and confirming if they share a common cellular way of action, could uncover the real relationship between depression and adult neurogenesis and potentially open doors to new therapeutic strategies. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Psychotic Major Depression |
