Jose A. Esteban, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Michigan, is investigating the cellular and molecular basis of synaptic plasticity, which he hopes will reveal the critical players responsible for the functional connectivity of the mature brain. He will study a family of proteins associated with mental retardation and intracellular membrane trafficking-the Rab proteins and determine whether these proteins control the movement of neurotransmitter receptors in and out from synapses, as a mechanism for synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus.
