John Georgiou, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital/University of Toronto, proposes to examine the role of neuronal calcium sensor-1 (NCS-1) in neuronal and behavioral function using mouse models. Elevated NCS-1 has been implicated in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Dr. Georgiou also plans to test whether drugs based on the structure of NCS-1 can serve as effective pharmaceuticals to replace or complement antipsychotic drugs as treatments for mental illnesses. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS |
