Benjamin Hall, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Johns Hopkins University, will examine the effectiveness with which the NMDA receptor, a receptor for glutamate, activates the transcription factor CREB. Previous work has suggested that decreased functioning of glutamate is linked to the symptoms of schizophrenia. Although normal development of the brain cortex relies on the correct activation and expression of NMDA receptors, it is unclear how a deficiency in NMDA signaling leads to altered architecture of the cortex. This work will help to resolve this question, and may ultimately suggest potential therapeutic targets for pharmaceutical research.
