Stefanie Hassel, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Pittsburgh, is interested in the neural basis of emotional lability, a key characteristic of bipolar disorder. She aims to distinguish patterns of neural responses for processing positive (happy) and negative (fear and sad) facial expressions in bipolar disorder patients and in healthy controls. To do this, her laboratory will use magnetoencephalography (MEG), a new methodology that allows investigation of neural dynamics of facial affect and subsequent mapping of these processes in space, time and frequency-specific domains. The study should facilitate the identification of potential neural markers of bipolar disorder. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar\Bipolar I |
